    PIMEC’s Role in Localizing Our Maritime Economy

    The second international expo features cutting-edge unmanned vessels, drone jammers, VR ship training programs, and aquaculture technologies.

    From autonomous maritime vehicles and first-person-view drones to aquaculture innovations, Pakistan’s second International Maritime Expo and Conference (PIMEC) has a wide array of displays. The four-day event launched Monday at Karachi’s Expo Centre, organized with support from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, co-hosted by Badar Expo Solutions, and backed by the Pakistan Navy.

    During the opening, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal highlighted that despite Pakistan’s strategic position as a “natural maritime bridge” bridging East and West, the country’s maritime industry contributes less than 1% to its gross domestic product (GDP). Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf emphasized Pakistan’s vast maritime potential, stating that the nation’s economic growth is closely tied to developing its maritime sector.

    According to a post from Defense IDA, Admiral Naveed Ashraf welcomed the Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics at PIMEC, which further underscores the importance of regional maritime cooperation.

    Tanvir Abbas, CEO of Badar Expo Solutions and the organizer of the event, noted that the local manufacturing share for maritime-related products has grown from 2% a decade ago to around 10%.

    “This is a significant improvement,” Abbas remarked, citing examples like locally produced vehicle armor and bomb-proofing—areas that previously depended heavily on imports. “We’re progressing rapidly, and I believe we’ll see exponential growth in indigenous production moving forward.”

    These advancements are designed not only to boost local capacity but also to turn into export opportunities. The expo hosts approximately 150 local and 28 international exhibitors, with participants from 45 countries—including the Saudi Transport Minister.

    A key reason to be interested in innovations from local companies is the high costs, delays, and unreliability associated with sourcing military and specialized equipment from abroad.

    Stingray Technologies

    A Pakistani defense company with over 20 years of experience in land, air, sea, and cyber technology, Stingray Technologies has developed unmanned surface vessels (USV) with ground control stations enabling remote operation. These vessels, currently used for reconnaissance but equipped with offensive capabilities, are 25 feet long and can travel 20–30 km, staying operational for 4–5 hours.

    They also showcased a maritime logistics drone capable of small-scale supply runs and IPMS, an integrated ship management system that consolidates ship maintenance data and monitoring into one platform. One spokesperson explained, “Ship management is often fragmented; this system provides all feeds in one place.”

    Additionally, Stingray is working on a virtual reality (VR) ship training program designed to create highly immersive experiences, including simulations of ship movement over moving platforms that mimic rough seas.

    National Electronics Complex of Pakistan (NECOP)

    NECOP specializes in designing advanced electronic systems. Their highlight at the expo was the SAFRAH drone jamming gun, an indigenous device engineered to combat the misuse of commercial drones.

    A NECOP representative explained that the device uses radar frequencies to intercept drones within a 1.5 km range. Weighing about nine kilograms, it can disable drone communications, preventing the drone from sending or receiving imagery, and compel it to land or return.

    The company plans to demonstrate the gun publicly on November 4, with sessions scheduled at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Expo Centre.

    Woot Tech and Winged Innovative Solutions

    Woot Tech, a Pakistani aerospace and unmanned systems firm, designs and builds drones and target aircraft for commercial and military applications. Their offerings include fixed-wing, multirotor, and hybrid VTOL platforms used for surveillance, mapping, cargo delivery, and target practice.

    Notably, they displayed a large remote-controlled drone and a USV equipped with a rotary camera, capable of reconnaissance or acting as a “suicide drone.” A smaller drone, designed by a Woot representative, was also on show.

    Winged Innovative Solutions (WIS) is another local company focusing on unmanned aerial systems tailored for industrial, commercial, and defense uses. Their portfolio includes VTOL systems, loitering munitions, and specialized drones for payload delivery, surveillance, and cloud seeding.

    Baykee

    A subsidiary of a global power equipment manufacturer headquartered in Lahore, Baykee Pakistan Pvt Ltd draws on Chinese technology and supplies a wide range of power modules. Their products serve sectors such as mining, defense, railways, and satellite technology.

    The company presented an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) designed for underwater repairs and a portable military jammer system powered by batteries.

    Zarwah Enterprises and AquaTech Fisheries

    Zarwah Enterprises, led by CEO Minahil Yousaf, is Pakistan’s first female-led aquaculture company committed to sustainable practices. They provide consulting, site development, pond construction, and aquaculture solutions for fish and shrimp farms, along with selling seeds, feeds, and farm supplies.

    Their projects include biosecurity systems for Dhabeji Aqua Foods, reservoir construction for Aqua Hatch, and the design of the Al-Sumaka aquafarm in Nankana Sahib.

    AquaTech Fisheries, founded by Muhammad Kamran and Ahmad Hussain, is focused on eco-friendly fish farming and feed innovation. They produce fish feed, Biofloc systems—using microbial biotechnology to optimize feed utilization—and aquaponics systems, along with selling fish.

    This overview offers just a glimpse of the local companies innovating at PIMEC. The clear trajectory points toward expanding Pakistan’s maritime industry through homegrown solutions to local challenges.

    Yasir Tufail’s Path as a NASA Troubleshooting Expert

    Yasir Tufail contributed to the development of the James Webb Space Telescope, Landsat, and TRMM satellites, earning multiple awards throughout his career. He worked on numerous projects at NASA, including the Landsat 8 and TRMM spacecraft, as well as the Aqua, Terra, and Aura Earth observation satellites. He participated in the OFT-2 test mission before the manned launch and led initial efforts on the CCRS (Capture, Containment, and Return System) for the Mars Sample Return mission, which was later canceled. Currently, he manages the TIGERISS project—the Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder—designed for deployment on the International Space Station in 2027 to investigate the origins of galactic cosmic rays.

    Born in a small village near Gujrat, Tufail developed a passion for the stars while observing the dark skies absent of artificial light. He moved to the United States in ninth grade, igniting his career with varied roles at NASA. The 2003 tragedy of the Space Shuttle Columbia, which resulted in the loss of all seven crew members including Indian-American astronaut Kalpana Chawla, deeply moved him and motivated his pursuit of space exploration studies.

    Following the same educational path as space scientists and astronauts, Tufail earned an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on avionics and completed both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Astronautical Engineering. During college, an opportunity to work with the Space Operations Institute allowed him to be part of NASA’s WISE mission, paving the way for his successful career. His achievements include the NASA Landsat-8 Group Achievement Award, JPL WISE Satellite Appreciation Award, and the Space Operations Institute Award in 2009, 2010, and 2014.

    His role as an integration and testing engineer for the JWST’s Integrated Science Instrument Module was among his most challenging. This involved integrating all instruments with the Optical Telescope Element and the spacecraft bus, then subjecting the modules to rigorous environmental tests. Tufail dedicated nearly five years of his 16-year NASA career to the testing process of the largest and most powerful space telescope ever constructed—a marvel featuring 18 hexagonal mirrors working in unison to capture the faintest infrared light, enabling it to serve as a time machine probing the universe’s infancy.

    Before launch, specialists identified over 300 potential points of failure, any of which could jeopardize decades of effort and billions of dollars. Tufail led thermal, acoustic, and vibration testing, including simulating rocket vibrations and exposing JWST to extreme temperatures at the Lagrange Point 2 orbit, roughly 1.5 million km from Earth. His team cooled the modules with nitrogen and helium tanks to test resilience in conditions colder than -387°F, along with hot environment testing to simulate conditions beyond Earth.

    One of his memorable moments involved aligning JWST’s 18 mirrors into a single optical system. Initially, the mirrors reflected 18 separate images, resembling a star cluster rather than a single image. Through wavefront sensing techniques, the team successfully aligned all mirrors into one, allowing the telescope to focus on a single star, a milestone that prompted collective relief.

    NASA chosen to position JWST at the L2 point, providing a stable and unobstructed view of the universe via infrared light. The location allows passive cooling, essential for the sensitive infrared instruments, with additional cryocooling for the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). After five years of testing, Tufail served as a Flight Dynamics Liaison Officer, coordinating flight path planning and supporting launch rehearsals, ensuring JWST’s precise placement in its orbit. He also acted as an ISIM Simulator Engineer.

    On December 25, 2021, the telescope’s mirrors unfurled like a cosmic bloom, and it successfully commenced its mission. JWST now provides groundbreaking images and data, revealing the earliest galaxies formed just hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang, capturing phenomena such as star formation in the Eagle Nebula, remnants of Cassiopeia A, and supernova dust that serves as cosmic building blocks. It has identified 40 planet-sized objects called JuMBOs in the Orion Nebula, challenging existing theories about star and planet formation, and detected key molecules like methane and carbon dioxide on exoplanet K2-18b.

    In addition to space missions, Tufail has contributed to NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, working to develop safe human transportation systems to the ISS in collaboration with American companies. He was involved in the OFT-2 test flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which carried NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the station, supporting critical pre-launch testing and mission rehearsals.

    Motivated to inspire Pakistan’s youth, Tufail encourages students to pursue STEM education instead of wasting time online. He has spoken at LUMS and NUST about his journey, emphasizing the importance of innovation and problem-solving in space science. He urges young people to think globally about their contributions and to contribute solutions to issues such as space debris, advocating for research and development at the university level. His message is clear: space exploration offers numerous opportunities, and with dedication, Pakistani youth can make a meaningful impact.

Sealed Google Pixels, Nothing phones, OnePlus flagships, ROG and Redmagic gaming devices, and boxed iPhones are being sold through parallel imports and specialized resellers. This provides faster access to niche models but also increases the risk of regulatory issues, warranty problems, and repair uncertainties.

    These devices generally arrive factory sealed. Sellers often provide shop-backed warranties and PTA registration services; however, the level of official support varies by brand and batch.

    Impact of the grey imports market on consumers

    The grey import economy allows buyers to access desired models quickly, sometimes even before they are officially launched in Pakistan. However, this convenience comes at a price. Final costs often increase once PTA registration, brokerage fees, and customs duties are factored in, meaning the out-the-door price can be significantly higher than the advertised price. Warranties offered on these units are typically provided by shops rather than manufacturers, limiting recourse in case of hardware or software issues.

    Repair times tend to be longer because region-specific spare parts are not typically available locally and must be imported. Additionally, some models require firmware or region adjustments that can prevent over-the-air updates or restrict certain network features. While buyers benefit from early access and novelty, they also face hidden costs, longer downtime, and uncertain long-term support.

    Understanding the PTA tax gap explains why sealed Pixel and OnePlus prices fluctuate widely.

    Listings for imported phones usually separate non-PTA stock from PTA-approved batches. Non-PTA devices may be cheaper initially, but buyers often pay extra for IMEI registration, customs duties, and brokerage fees. Retailers often market PTA approval as an optional add-on or promote limited PTA-cleared stock at higher prices. This creates a confusing price disparity; for some flagship models, the difference can amount to tens of thousands of rupees.

    Most parallel imports lack authorized manufacturer service centers in Pakistan. Repairs are consequently handled by independent technicians or the selling shops. Region-specific variants—like some Pixels and gaming models—often require parts ordered individually, extending repair times and raising costs. While seller warranties exist, they are contractual promises from retailers rather than official manufacturer guarantees, and their enforcement and spare part availability differ depending on location and seller.

    How retailers market ‘global variants’ and ‘PTA approved’ phones as premium options

    Stores often label phones as “global ROM,” “US box,” “factory unlocked,” or “PTA ready” to justify higher prices for certain stock. Influencer reviews and international unboxing videos boost demand for these variants, which sellers capitalize on with upsells such as IMEI verification, PTA paperwork handling, and extended shop warranties. While these measures facilitate smoother transactions, they do not substitute for manufacturer-backed after-sales support.

    Position of iPhones in the market

    iPhones are available through both channels: PTA-approved boxed units sold via authorized resellers and cheaper grey imports listed on classifieds and in street markets. Global warranty coverage is limited without Apple’s official service presence in Pakistan; consumers often rely on reseller warranties or third-party repair networks. Persistent rumors suggest a possible Apple authorized reseller arrangement, which, if confirmed, could clarify warranty and service concerns.

    Example: Nothing’s efforts toward formalization

    The market’s structure is evolving. In an interview with The Express Tribune, Yellostone confirmed it is the official distributor for select Nothing Phone models in Pakistan, offering local warranty support. However, this formal channel is limited to specific models, and many other Nothing variants, along with competing brands, continue to be primarily available through parallel importers.

    A balanced approach for buyers

    If you’re interested in importing or early models, consider the following steps:

    1. Check IMEI status on the PTA DIRBS portal prior to purchase.

    2. Obtain a written warranty from the seller or distributor, detailing coverage duration and what faults are covered.

    3. Confirm availability of spare parts and typical repair timelines with the seller.

    4. Compare the final price—including PTA registration—rather than just the initial sticker price.

    5. Prefer units sold through recognized distributors (like Yellostone for certain Nothing models), especially if warranty and parts support are priorities.

    Today’s boxed imports are an integral part of Pakistan’s smartphone landscape. They offer consumers options and early access but shift post-sale responsibilities onto buyers. Whether this parallel import channel remains a temporary workaround or becomes a permanent feature depends on clearer regulatory policies, expanded official distribution, and stricter consumer protection enforcement.

    The country’s first domestically manufactured advanced X-ray machine was revealed at the 22nd Health Asia International Exhibition and Conference in Karachi on Thursday.

    Muhammad Rafiq, Director of Rays Medical World, explained that the company previously produced basic X-ray machines that are now installed in numerous hospitals across Pakistan. The latest version is an improved Flat Panel Digital Radiography (FDR) system, fully designed and assembled by Pakistani engineers using local resources.

    “Imported advanced X-ray machines cost around Rs15 million, but ours are priced at Rs4 million,” Rafiq told The Express Tribune. “Hospitals like Chughtai Lab and Kutiyana Memon Hospital are already using these versions,” he added. “Our model is much more affordable than imported ones, which makes advanced radiography accessible to more local hospitals.” He also mentioned plans to export the device in the near future.

    “Our goal with this new design is to make the machine portable so that a single FDR can be used for chest and other types of X-rays. It’s a fully digital system that can even be operated via a mobile phone,” Rafiq explained.

    The event was inaugurated by Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal and attracted a large crowd of government officials, healthcare professionals, industry experts, and international visitors.

    “Events like Health Asia showcase the growing potential of Pakistan’s healthcare and medical technology sectors,” Kamal said. “More of these exhibitions should be held regularly to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure along modern lines,” he added.

    Other Exhibitors:

    Aman Ventures showcased a digital health platform called AViCA, streamlining healthcare for patients and providers. They also introduced AViCardia, a waterproof, reusable patch capable of monitoring heart activity continuously for up to seven days—allowing quick assessments of heart health (a portable ECG).

    “This device is the first of its kind in Pakistan,” stated a product manager from Aman Ventures, noting it’s currently being used in two Karachi hospitals.

    Al-Bashir Custom Fabrication specializes in tailored vehicles, producing and delivering locally manufactured ambulances customized to meet specific hospital needs, as well as police and private vehicles.

    Boston Health AI has developed Hami, the world’s first AI-powered physician’s assistant, which helps gather patient histories, creates clinical notes, and offers treatment suggestions. They claim Hami aims to make patient consultations more efficient by reducing time spent on history-taking, allowing more focus on diagnosis and treatment discussions.

    Hammad Foundation runs charitable initiatives like roti banks providing Rs10 rotis in Karachi, water supply projects across Balochistan and Tharparkar, and a medical complex offering services for just Rs50 to Rs100—these services are open to everyone.

    Novacare Hospital, Pakistan’s first international digital hospital, is scheduled to open in Islamabad in October 2026, aiming to operate entirely digitally and plans to expand to Lahore and Karachi. They intend to adhere to British NHS standards, with international auditors conducting quality assessments.

    Taskin Bioregeneration, an Iranian biotech firm, specializes in cell and gene therapies. Their DestroCell technology targets autism by reducing brain inflammation, supporting neural repair, and improving social behavior in children. They also develop treatments for wound healing, with hopes of offering these services in Pakistan soon.

    Behrad Royesh Royan, based in Iran, is a leading manufacturer of gynecology and infertility medical equipment. They have already exported products to Russia, Lebanon, and Iraq and are now exploring opportunities to partner with hospitals in Pakistan.

    Couples from around the world can now get married using the Abu Dhabi government’s app without even visiting the emirate, according to the project’s director who spoke with AFP on Tuesday.

    The concept of online marriage is still in its early stages, with Ukraine pioneering a similar service last year that allowed couples separated by conflict to marry through their government app.

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, the UAE also tested online ceremonies for residents living within the country.

    However, the new version aims to serve a much broader audience, explained Mohamed Al Askar, head of the Abu Dhabi government’s TAMM app.

    “It’s available to everyone. Anyone who wants to get married in Abu Dhabi, regardless of nationality, can access the service online,” he told AFP during the Dubai-based Gitex technology fair.

    “People can go online, complete the entire process without visiting a physical location. We are among the first to provide this.”

    For 800 AED (approximately $218), users can fill out online forms, submit required documents, hire an officiant, and even arrange a virtual ceremony—all in as little as 24 hours, he said.

    The service is accessible to Emiratis, foreign residents, and non-residents—who must appoint a lawyer or a local representative in the country.

    The UAE is the only Gulf nation permitting non-religious marriages, a privilege primarily reserved for foreigners.

    The marriage feature was integrated into the latest version of the TAMM app, which enables residents to access over 1,000 government services online.

    When tested with a few colleagues, everyone was surprised at how simple it was to turn off the feature. It’s a welcome respite, especially as companies like Meta continue to prioritize AI content in our feeds.

    However, this feature isn’t flawless. Users like @yogeshgosavi have reported that their feeds still show AI content despite turning off the option. Others have mentioned that disabling AI images negatively impacts the relevance of their recommendations.

    Additionally, turning off AI content doesn’t entirely eliminate it. When you disable an option, a pop-up warns that doing so will only reduce the amount of AI-generated content, not remove it completely.

    Furthermore, Pinterest updated its privacy policies earlier this year, stating it may collect and use your data to train and refine its machine learning and AI models, regardless of when Pins were posted. This means your data continues to influence AI training, even if AI content is less visible in your feed.

    While Pinterest cannot fully separate itself from GenAI, many artists and illustrators see this move as a positive direction.     Devoret serves as Google Quantum AI’s chief scientist outside of his university roles.     Much like people after COVID, AI is unable to pick up on social cues. Specifically, social cues and cultural contexts of non-Western societies when using it to translate another language. 

    Say you host someone at your house and ask them if they want chai, and then they (for whatever strange reason) say they don’t want any, you won’t just leave it at that, right? You’d ask if they want anything else. Probably tell them not to do takkalluf (formality) and just accept your hospitality, which is usually a decent move.

    But according to research released earlier this month, the AI would simply leave it at that. This research was done on the Iranian tradition of respect and hospitality: ‘ta’arof’, but you can imagine that if it can’t do one culture, it probably can’t do others either. And it’s not a question of the AI being impolite. A study showed that Llama 3 was extremely polite in Western contexts, but could not replicate that politeness in a Persian/Iranian context. 

    So in an effort to be polite and not be ‘pushy’, the AI would lose the cultural context and specific etiquette in translation, and you’d end up actually being rude.

    I’m chalking this up to how AI models are usually trained on large, but specifically Western, datasets. For AI to become culturally sensitive, there’s a lot of work that’s left to do, and a lot of data that needs inputting.

    One of the most severe cases involved Latvian Twitch streamer Raivo “RastalandTV” Plavnieks, who is fighting stage-4 cancer and had been fundraising through his streams to cover treatment costs. After downloading BlockBlasters during a live broadcast, he watched as $32,000 of his supporters’ donations disappeared—funds meant to keep him alive.

    Valve removed the game on September 21, almost a month after the malicious update was released—yet by then, damage was done.

    Every security breach represents real people suffering genuine losses. For gamers and content creators, staying vigilant online isn’t optional; it’s essential for survival. Even major gaming platforms can deliver malware if nobody’s paying attention, and if you store cryptocurrency or sensitive data on the same PC you game on, you’re basically playing Russian roulette with your finances.

    The most unsettling aspect of Silent Hill f? It’s not actually Silent Hill.

    Konami’s Silent Hill ‘f’ feels less like a haunting return and more like an anime-inspired spin-off with a stolen name badge.

    It abandons the franchise’s signature psychological horror, complex lore, and eerie otherworldly environments for a story penned by a cosplay-obsessed anime fan, reminiscent of early 2000s schoolyard horror where classmates secretly plot murders.

    The “Dark Shrine” nightmare realm is dull and repetitive rather than terrifying; the tiny, uninspired world lacks atmosphere, and untranslated environmental text leaves non-Japanese players at a disadvantage.

    Combat feels sluggish, the interface is clunky, and despite a 10-hour playtime with promises of multiple endings, the game fails to evoke the series’ core horror charm. Honestly, the most disturbing thing might be how far Silent Hill ‘f’ strays from the original series.

    Aaron Christophel, a software developer and hardware hacker, managed to run the classic shooter on the Aspire Pixo Kit. What makes this device unique is its small color display and a 32-bit microcontroller, allowing Doom to run at a choppy 6 FPS on the vape.

    It’s not running natively on the vape, though. The game is streamed from a PC to the device via USB. Since the vape has just 64 KB of RAM—nowhere near the 4 MB Doom requires—it can’t run directly. Still, turning a vape into a secondary monitor is a neat trick and a fun proof of concept.

    And of course, the inevitable question: Can it run Crysis?

    Advances in gene sequencing have uncovered parts of our DNA that remain stable in most mammals but have undergone rapid change in humans. Specifically, neurons in the brain’s outer layer, called L2/3 IT neurons, evolved quickly compared to primates, coinciding with significant changes in genes associated with autism.

    While these findings indicate that evolution may have favored autism-related genes, it’s unclear what specific advantage they confer. Some of these genes are involved in delaying brain development, which might have allowed for longer periods of learning and language acquisition. This extended development could have played a role in human evolution by fostering more complex thought processes.

    Essentially, the same evolutionary adaptations that increased brain complexity also increased neurodiversity. Recognizing this makes the idea that vaccines cause autism seem even more unfounded—it’s simply a natural outcome of our evolutionary path.
