    If you think this sounds familiar, it’s because Gemini already existed in the side panel of Gmail, offering functionalities like draft suggestions and quick replies. However, now these summary cards will surface on their own when Gmail determines that an email is lengthy enough to merit one.

    In theory, this could save you a lot of time. You can still use the manual “Summarize this email” option for shorter messages if you prefer. The side panel tools remain available, but this update makes Gemini more of an active participant in your email interactions rather than just an optional assistant.

    Privacy Concerns and AI Reliability

    Whether you see this as a useful upgrade or a privacy invasion depends on your comfort level with AI anticipating your needs. Apple attempted something similar by using AI to summarize app notifications, but it led to numerous errors—especially with news summaries—which eventually forced Apple to stop the feature for news apps altogether. That’s one reason I remain skeptical about Apple’s AI capabilities.

    Google has its share of issues too. Its AI-generated summaries in search results have occasionally produced misleading or nonsensical information. While Gemini’s email summaries are unlikely to make bizarre suggestions, the accuracy of these auto-generated snippets is certainly a concern. A slightly off-base summary could misrepresent tone or meaning, especially in sensitive or professional emails.

    How to Disable Auto Summaries

    Currently, this feature only supports emails written in English. Depending on your location, it may be enabled or disabled by default; it’s turned off in the EU, U.K., Switzerland, and Japan due to stricter privacy regulations. If you reside outside these areas, you’ll have to manually turn it off.

    In a Google Workspace setting, your administrator can disable the feature entirely. As it stands, you can’t turn off the summaries individually; you’ll need to opt out of all personalized Gmail features by switching off Smart Features. For specific guidance on disabling these features, check Google’s support page.

    I personally advise turning this feature off to safeguard your email privacy. Allowing AI more access to potentially sensitive correspondence feels uncomfortable to me.

    For Google, this is just another way to integrate AI into the daily products you use. For busy individuals overwhelmed with emails, this might feel like a blessing. However, for those who prioritize privacy, it’s important to be cautious—perhaps even consider alternatives like Proton Mail or similar services.

    AI Could Soon Take Control of Your Android Phone

    Google has unveiled its ambitious concept for a “universal AI assistant” capable of grasping the context around you, devising solutions, and executing them autonomously. The aim is to develop an all-seeing, all-hearing assistant that knows when to step in without requiring a manual prompt.

    This new assistant is named Project Astra. During I/O 2025, Google showcased some stunning demonstrations of its capabilities. In one instance, a user faced issues with their bike brakes and asked Astra to locate the bike’s online manual.

    After finding the manual, Astra was instructed to scroll to the section about the brakes, which it did flawlessly. The user then requested Astra to search for a video tutorial on YouTube and even to get in touch with the local bike shop for information on the necessary parts. Astra could even call the nearby bike shop on the user’s behalf to check if the needed components were in stock.

    The Verge reported another demo where Bibo Xiu, a product manager from the Google DeepMind team, pointed her phone camera at a pair of Sony headphones and asked Astra to identify them. Astra responded, saying they were either WH-1000XM4 or WH-1000XM3—confusing labels that many humans might struggle with, too.

    Once identified, Xiu requested Astra to pull up the manual and explain how to pair the headphones with her phone. She then interrupted the assistant mid-explanation and asked it to pair the headphones for her. Unsurprisingly, Astra handled the task without a hitch.

    The demos suggest that Astra is simulating screen interactions to navigate the device. Indicators from the screen recordings imply that Astra reads the screen and determines where to navigate as it completes tasks.

    A Universal AI Assistant Is on the Way

    While these demos are impressive, they’re not flawless. User input is still necessary, and, in Xiu’s case, she had to manually grant Astra access to her phone’s screen.

    Currently, Project Astra serves as a testing ground for Google’s most ambitious AI ideas. Features that perform well in these tests often trickle down to applications like Gemini, making them available to the public. Google envisions ultimately transforming the Gemini app into a universal AI assistant capable of handling everyday tasks.

    Google is diligently working on gradually phasing out outdated tools for newer, AI-enhanced alternatives. AI Mode is replacing traditional Google Search, and Gemini already features an array of impressive capabilities for users to explore.

    That being said, even today’s most advanced AI systems require you to provide prompts at each step and offer necessary data and context; manual intervention may still be necessary. Astra aims to simplify these inputs by drawing on your information from various platforms, enabling it to create the context needed for action.

    Achieving this goal won’t be easy, and privacy and security concerns are paramount with a universal AI assistant like Astra. While Astra could potentially handle many tasks locally using the Gemini Nano model, the demos haven’t indicated as much.

    Creating an assistant of this caliber will take time. However, these demonstrations give us a glimpse into the future. A universal AI assistant may not arrive tomorrow, but it’s definitely on the horizon, and I’m looking forward to its debut.

    All Web Features—Now in Your Pocket

    The mobile app offers all the functionalities available in the web version. By logging in with your Google account, you’ll access your notebooks, each adorned with colorful emojis. Every note consists of three sections: Sources, Chat, and Studio.

    You can upload sources in various formats, including PDF, text, Markdown, and even audio files. Linking to websites and YouTube videos is just as straightforward, or you can paste content directly. The app’s Discover Sources feature is also included, allowing you to type in a topic and let the app suggest relevant materials. Personally, I find this feature somewhat lacking—if I wanted an AI to sift through the internet, I’d just use ChatGPT.

    The Studio section is where the real magic of NotebookLM happens. Here, you’ll find the Audio Overview feature, which offers a podcast-style summary of your notes to enhance your learning experience.

    What’s New on Mobile?

    There are only a couple of notable enhancements in the mobile version compared to the web version, both linked to the Audio Overview feature.

    First, the app provides a dynamic, animated graphic while the audio plays—something the web version lacks, where visuals are rather bland. This is a nice addition for those who enjoy visual elements, but honestly, I’m usually multitasking or taking notes in Obsidian while I listen.

    Another benefit is that you can delete Audio Overviews from the app before downloading. On the web, you’re required to download the entire audio file, which can be tedious if you realize halfway through that the overview doesn’t align with your needs. This small change significantly improves the mobile experience.

    However, there’s a drawback: the Studio tab is quite limited. Other features like pre-structured prompts for Timeline, Briefing Document, and FAQ, along with NotebookLM’s Mind Maps—something I’m currently obsessed with—are missing from the mobile app.

    So far, on mobile, it’s just Audio Overviews. Even if you’ve created Mind Maps, Timelines, or other templates on your desktop, they won’t show up in the app. This is a setback for users who rely on those features.

    NotebookLM started as a small research project under Google. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s an AI assistant that works solely with the information you provide. At first glance, this might seem limiting. After all, what good is AI if it’s not all-knowing?

    However, if you’ve ever used AI for studying, you understand its importance. AI inaccuracies are common, and sometimes I prefer answers derived from my professor’s notes rather than generic internet content. My grades depend on the material taught in my classes.

    Creating mobile apps is now easier than ever, thanks to the rise of AI and no-code platforms, so it’s puzzling why Google took so long.
